Tarragona, a historical legacy looking out onto the Mediterranean
Quiet coves and beaches, one of the best climates on the Mediterranean coast all the year round, hiking trails and villages with seafood gastronomy. Tarragona guards almost as many secrets as virtues that we’d like you to discover on a getaway.
You can start with the historical part of Tarragona, a city that preserves the existence of a thousand-year-old civilisation like no other. There are numerous ways of getting to know it, as it’s true to say that the Roman past is what reigns supreme in the capital of the Costa Dorada. The amphitheatre, the praetorium and the Roman circus date back to this period.
Meanwhile, the mediaeval period has left us with the old town with its stone houses and the spectacular cathedral, which is well worth a visit, particularly at night, when it’s beautifully lit.
The central market, the numerous squares (ideal for enjoying a vermouth), the bustling Rambla Nova and the fishing neighbourhood of Serrallo, one of the best places to eat in the whole city, are also places you should spend your time in. Don’t forget the rice dishes and the seafood from the area.
On the outskirts of the city Tarragona gives way to spectacular sights such as the great Roman aqueduct of Les Ferreres and the Devil’s Bridge, a structure over 200 metres long that you can walk across.
Are you looking for the ideal beach for your summer holiday? Maybe you didn’t know that the province is home to some of the most beautiful coves on the Mediterranean coast.
Let’s begin with the most popular ones: the Waikiki cove or Cala Fonda, with the spectacular Tamarit castle in the background, the beach in Altafulla, one of the busiest towns in July and August, attracting visitors with its seafaring village essence, and the huge sandy beach and promenade in Torredembarra, which are always lively at any time of the year.
The must-visit locations in the province of Tarragona
The coves in El Perelló and the peace and quiet of the unspoilt beaches in L’Ametlla de Mar, the marina in Cambrils, with its beaches ideal for any evening, and, of course, the Ebro Delta!
When you reach its domains, you’ll enter the only wetland in Catalonia, one of the most important protected areas in the country with a landscape that you’ll never forget.
Take your time as you stroll through its paddy fields, reach La Punta del Fangar and enjoy one of the best rice dishes in the world in Sant Carles de la Ràpita. The experience is even more fun and beautiful if you try it by bike.
Or you might prefer to drive along the coast to Salou. It’s always a good idea to go to Salou and there’s always something to do there. Not only because of its golden sand, its calm waters, its sunrises with pink skies and its restaurants with good food and a cheerful atmosphere. But also, and above all, because of the adrenalin you’ll be fuelled with if you decide to go to Port Aventura.
After Salou we propose more adventures in the province of Tarragona. If you’re looking for sport and nature, Montsant Natural Park, with its freshwater pools for a dip in summer, is ideal.
And, of course, a visit to Siurana, a fairytale town in El Priorat, will form an essential part of this trip. The image is spectacular. It sits on a great rock and proudly presides over the river with the same name that flows past it.
If you have time to spare, you can stop off in Reus, the capital of El Baix Camp and an important oenological centre. If not, don’t worry, because we know that you’ll return to Tarragona.
